This is a real support request:

Hi developer,
I really hate how you have to pay for more minutes I was wondering if you could update to do surveys also as a way of paying?

The mental model of this individual is astounding:

  1. How do I eat a survey, or use it to buy computing equipement on which to develop?
  2. How does a person who has $2k/year to burn on an iPhone not have a few bucks to spend on the software to power it?
  3. Why would a survey filled out by someone who demonstrably does not participate in commercial markets be of any commercial value?

I also have a new contender in the “WTF” iOS project category:

I guess the moral of the story is, raise prices.  You have essentially infinite pressure for cheap development labor, but the only pressure for expensive labor is you.  No matter how cheap you are, people will always complain that it isn’t cheap enough.  Counterintuitively, raising prices can reduce complaints without actually dropping revenue.  I raised the price on one my products by 5x, and the revenue tripled and the support burden halved.  And fewer people complained about it being expensive.  Because the number of people who are going to complain about cheap not being free is larger than the number of people who will complain about expensive not being cheap.

Want me to build your app / consult for your company / speak at your event? Good news! I'm an iOS developer for hire.

I’m guessing by surveys he meant install one of those pay walls where the you (the developer) gets paid (in cash) when one of your users completes a survey. The people paying to get surveys completed are looking for various things. For example, pharmaceutical companies pay top rates to get a medical doctor to complete a survey. If you happened to have an app with a large number of medical doctors you could generate a lot of munchable revenue with a survey wall!

The final paragraph is a gem, in any case.
